Our featured artist for the month of June is currently a
resident of Charlotte, North Carolina. Born in Canada, Leighton
did not begin to paint until he was 60. During a summer sabbatical
in Vancouver, British Columbia he casually picked up in the home
where he was staying one of Betty Edwards's books on drawing,
and was fascinated.
"I had never thought of drawing or painting", he says.
"I thought I could
not draw a circle or a straight line". But that encounter
began his love of
painting, especially watercolor and pastel scenes from places
his travels
have taken him, from Australia to Croatia, Canada to Ireland.
An adopted child, he learned after he began to paint that he
is related
through his birth father to the famous Canadian artist, Lawren
Harris,
one of the founders of the Group of Seven.
"Painting taught me more than to see the world around in
a fresh way",
Leighton says. "It also taught me to slow down, and to look
with insight
on the people I meet, and the younger leaders I have the privilege
to
mentor".
He has pursued his calling as a Presbyterian minister, preaching
in over
forty countries, often in years past partnering with his brother-in-law
Billy Graham. Now he heads an organization which focuses on leadership
and
spiritual mentoring of emerging leaders. Inspired by Vincent
Van Gogh's
description of Jesus as "more of an artist than the artists",
Leighton
Ford also seeks to be an artist of the soul, and a friend on
the
journey.
Reverend Ford will be signing his brand new giclee editions,
along with
his book in the Gallery during the June "TOUR DE ART",
a program of the
Avery County COALITION OF GALLERIES.

We're now the proud hosts of the coolest ten year + art project
around. My Friend Clark
installed one of his ART-O-MAT
machines in our gallery on July 14, (ours is known as "Old
Port") and we have been Ker-Plunking Culture here at artpurveyors.com
world headquarters ever since! These machines are in some pretty
prestigious places, like the
Whitney Museum, Southeastern
Center for Contemporary Art, Turchin
Center for Visual Art, The
Andy Warhol Museum, the Gamekeeper
Restaurant, and now...Fine Art Row in
beautiful Downtown Foscoe. My house is now fuller than before
of wonderful, tiny art objects...and we have created lots of
new ART-O ADDICTS around the greater Foscoe area as well. If
you're ever in the neighborhood, stop in and Ker-Plunk something...you'll
be hooked too! |

More About Digital Printing
by Kari Anderson
Four years ago, Mike Hill branched out from the retail art
supply business when he purchased Wildflowers
Fine Art Publishing, a giclee publishing company. Mike says
that his store, Purveyors
of Art & Design in Boone, North Carolina, and his giclee
business make good brothers-in-law. I can sell
my customers the canvas, brushes and color, then go collect their
artwork once theyre done with it, do the digital image
capture, and charge for the service. read
