Catherine Altice received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting
& Printmaking from UNC-Greensboro, where she graduated Magna
Cum Laude. She currently owns and operates the Tin
Roof Gallery & Studio, 103 N. Jefferson Ave., West Jefferson,
NC. Awards and honors for her work include: "Best of the
Blue Ridge", August 2006, "Art in the Park", Spring
2006 Honorable Mention, and a Western NC Arts Councils Grant
Project Award, among others.
October Octave" and "Night Song, giclee reproductions
on canvas, are selections from Catherine's ongoing series of
mixed-media collage paintings, and are her first ever works to
be published. In Catherine's own words, her work is a reflection,
a recollection, a crawl through Grandmas attic, and an
inner excavation. It is a place of cool blue mountains, lightening
bugs and memories of days spent climbing trees and running around
my backyard with a belly full of giggles. These early childhood
memories are etched in my soul and continue to crop up in my
work. My heart is in the farmland of southwest Virginia and the
Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. This is my trail
of unveiling beauty. As I move on through my story, I find that
there are more missing pieces in my family tree - for better
or worse - those untold stories keep calling - or clinging -
to my visual senses like an old song. I see my past unfolding
and shifting into the colorful splendor of the present - I see
the art of living gracefully revealed in the trees, in the birds,
and in the good earth that my grandparents and great grandparents
farmed. Home remains a beautiful place. I am thankful for the
Great Mystery that brought me here - for family, friends, rivers,
trees, the old red clay and all that follows.
