These folks are mighty green. Not only do they have the solvent-free system of oil painting but 100% of the electric power used at their shop is purchased through the renewable power option. They have purchased more efficient filling equipment and reduced energy consumption by 71%. Almost all of the machinery is reconditioned/recycled--one of the fillers was built in 1951. The acrylic resin is produced in a factory about 2 miles from the shop, the bee farm that makes the honey for watercolor and gouache is about 30 miles away--so even the bees are local. The walnut oil comes from neighboring California to cut down on transportation pollution. The factory waste water used for cleaning equipment is recycled and reused for 2 weeks before it is collected for EPA certified disposal. The paperboard box packaging is all made with post-consumer recycled paper waste as is the paper used for trifolds. The cadmium pigments are by-products of zinc manufacturing which are converted from a toxic heavy metal into a "biologically unavailable" pigment that can be disposed of in garbage as solid waste. Graham products are also available in Canada through selected outlets, and www.artpurveyors.com will export from the USA to anywhere in the world.

A Traditional Approach to Color Making

Click for info on how M. Graham makes Artists' Color

The use of color to create art dates back over 30,000 years when plant and animal matter were smeared, blown and dabbed on cave walls to create some of the most beautiful and vibrant images in the history of art. As late as the 18th century it was left to the artist or his apprentice to create colors for their own use. These colors were often tailored to specific painting techniques and utilized a wide variety of natural materials for pigments and vehicles. By 1740 the commercial manufacture of paint began, leaving artists more time to concentrate on their work and beginning a process of standardization for artists' color which has been warmly embraced by some and vigorously opposed by others.
For M. Graham & Co. the tradition of color making is one of hand craft. No amount of industrial standardization can approach the level of quality which an adept craftsperson achieves...colors created slowly, filled by hand and carefully inspected for flaws at every stage. The result is noticeably brighter, more intense, stronger and easier to use than standard commercial offerings. This level of excellence can only exist in an environment where quality is paramount.

How to use M. Graham Oils without solvents...

M. Graham & Co. offers artists a safer, more environmentally friendly method for traditional oil painting than any other line of artist's color!
